Ginger Creek Park

WHAT
Ginger Creek Park is a neighborhood amenity created in 2006 to replace an eyesore produced by trash, grime, and troublesome activities such as illegal parking. It was built by volunteer efforts of neighborhood residents. It sits on the right-of-way of the Cedar River Pipeline, a water transmission facility running parallel to Beacon Way and owned by Seattle Public Utilities (SPU). With the permission of SPU, the Association maintains the surface area as a park.

NAME
Ginger Creek Park is named after Ginger Creek, a minor stream that flows northward from Cascade Park to the Cedar River, passing through the Tiffany Park neighborhood in an underground pipe. The stream is visible between Cascade Park and the exposed pipes of the Cedar River Pipeline at the southern edge of the park in Tiffany Park.

WHERE
The park is in the northwestern part of the neighborhood, at the inter-
section of SE 16th Street and Beacon Way SE. It is at the center of this Bing Maps aerial view.
MAINTENANCE
Maintenance is performed by neighborhood volunteers, usually in organized work parties, but some nearby neighbors have, over the years, performed work on their own initiative. If the work involves an activity that could jeopardize the pipeline, the Association has to get the approval of the landowner before doing the work. This was necessary when building the bulletin board ("kiosk") because digging was required for installing the footings of the bulletin board. Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) felt that the shallow digging was not a problem and imposed no unusual measures.) The use of any weed-killer requires the authorization of King County.

DESCRIPTION
The park consists of an open grassy area bounded by shrubs and flowers on raised beds. A gravel path curves through the grassy area. An arbor and picnic table stand on the gravel path. A few boulders are scattered around the perimeter. The most prominent boulder has the park's name engraved on the side facing Puget Drive. A bulletin board exists for the posting of information about the neighborhood. To help maintain the appearance and usefulness of the park, a dog poop station is present along its eastern edge, close to Beacon Way SE. The station contains a dispenser of plastic bags and a waste receptacle.
